Chara's story is the same as in Undertale for the most part.
However, she was forced to witness the Human commit genocide run after genocide run, unable to stop them.
Unable to punish them for their sins.
Despite owning the human's soul, she was powerless to prevent the deaths of those she cared about, losing hope with each run.
On the verge of breaking, Chara watched as the human once again fought against the skeleton known as Sans.
She began to observe how he ignored the rules of the world, bending it to his will.
After observing the skeleton for several runs, Chara's Determination was higher than ever.
She began use what power she had in order to bend the rules of the world in an attempt to stop the human.
The first result caused her stats to stop resetting whenever she restored the world, allowing her to influence reality easier.
After countless resets, Chara once more agreed to restore the world in exchange for the human's SOUL, however, this time she altered one simple thing that changed it forever.
The moment the human fell into the Underground, their body was altered and transformed into Chara's, preventing them from having any control in the world.
With the human's soul now fully her's, and a new body to call her own, Chara finally put an end to the human's sins.
At least, in her own world.

The current timeline of SoulSwap takes place ten years after Chara initiated the last True Reset when she finally took the Eight Human's body and made it her own.
Having a living body once more, despite not being completely bound to it, meant that she once again started to age, and is now twenty years old, making her stronger and faster than she had been as a child.
Chara no longer wears a striped green sweater that often, instead she wears a green zip-up hoodie like her StoryShift counterpart, and almost always has her mask covering her face.
She has abandoned her true name, and simply goes by The Demon or The Stranger.
